Book confessions

On Book Binge  today they are talking about “Book Confessions”, so I thought I would share some of mine with you guys:

  • I am exactly like Holly (one of the bloggers on Book Binge); I don’t take very good care of my books.  No matter how many bookmarks I buy, I still end up folding down the corners to mark my place.  When I start reading some of the shorter books (like Harlequin Presents and Super Romance), I bend the spine as soon as I start reading. Yes ladies, I bend the spine on purpose and then if the spine won’t bend like I want it to, it constantly annoys me while I’m reading.  The spine bending is caused by my need to hold the book more comfortably in one hand.  The one exception to this would be hard covers, I always use something to mark my place, usually a piece of torn paper. Where are all the pretty bookmarks when I need them?
  • Also like Holly, if I lend a book out to someone I expect to get it back in the exact shape that it’s in and in a timely manner.  I experience anxiety while the book is away from me. Seriously it annoys me and I will at times call to check in with the person to see if they are almost done so that I can have it back.  Because of this issue of mine, when I finally convinced on of my friends to read the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, I bought her the first 4 books.  I honestly couldn’t part with my own well-worn copies. J
  • I do not buy a book because of its cover.  I’ve heard too often about how little input the author is able to give and because of that – I’ve been known to buy a book in spite of its cover. Also, I’ve read too many books where the lead character has blond hair but on the cover the woman’s hair is black.  I figure if there are these sorts of discrepancies out there, how useful is the cover in judging the book?
  • I never ever read the end of a book before reading the rest.  Just like with my set in stone rule about reading series books in order, I prefer to read the book in the order that the author intended.
  • I’ve been known to make excuses to get out of doing something in order to stay home and read.  In fact, I think that my excuse making isn’t very good because lately my friend Ruby can tell by the tone of my voice that I really would rather continue reading my book than talk to her.  Crap, I’m a bad friend!  (in my defense this does not happen all the time…but there are times when I am in the midst of a story and want to return)

So, those are my book confessions.  I would love to hear some of yours or go visit the Book Binge to read what is being said and post over there.

  • Oh my….no bookmarks, spine bending. Gasp!

Then again, I always read the end of the book.

One thing we do have in common is that I have been known to choose a good book over company once or twice!

  • Hi Jessica,

I do the same thing, I always make excuses to stay home and read…I’m a homebody most of the time but I’m just beginning to remember this, during the summer, I hardly ever read and I totally missed it.

I’m always reading, but I go through these spurts when thats pretty much all I want to do. I cringe when the phone rings, make no plans to go out, and my netflix movies just sit on my coffee table…I’ve been like that my whole life. Right now is one of those times when I want to spend the majority of my day reading a book. (its a major bonus that I now have this blog to talk about them. :)
